Phil’s History:

A ‘work in progress’ family history website starting from an Archer family of South Oxford, who were freemen, brewers, haulage contractors, and first ‘Archer & Co’ then ‘Archer Cowley & Co’ furniture removers in the 19th and 20th Centuries, inter alia, to whom are linked by marriage the Penfolds and Wells of Southwark and Surrey, the Reeds of Devon, the Gilders of Oxford and Hinckley, the Morgans of Petworth, Sussex, the Garners of Middleton, Lancs and many others. There are connections via Phil and the present generation (born 1930s/40s) with a patent law firm known as "UD&L" with motor-racing and Scottish antecedents.

Only one name known: Back row, last boy on right (the only face partly-hidden by the boy in front): Frederick George Blake Archer (my dad), and if the date is right, he is 14 less two months and 4 days, so he is 13 and 9 months and 27 days. His Sunday School Teacher looks a dedicated soul, and his sunday school friends. Presumably I could get the names of his fellow-pupils from the records (at the Oxfordshire Family History Centre at Cowley) of Walton Street Methodist Chapel, and indeed the name of his teacher. This is Sunday 7th July 1919, the birthday of his wife-to-be, Gwen Penfold, who was aged 10 in 1919.
