Another photo from the ‘small family firm’ days of UD&L, this one sent-in by Val, who, I believe, must be the blonde lady, third from the right in the front row. This is surely a Christmas-time celebration? And the cigarettes are being handed round. I believe that must be Arthur Fagg in the rear left-hand corner of this shot, surrounded by a gaggle of girls, all lighting-up. Arthur had previously been a hotel concierge, and was employed by WUD as a general-factotum (predecessor of Dave King who did that job in my early UD&L days), and who nipped out for cigarettes for the partners and delivered bottles of sherry to the relevant barristers’ chambers at Christmas. And who is the other man reaching into the cigarette-box while keeping an eye on the camera, I wonder? Mike Wisher and Steve Walters, to succeed FEPL and DGG as senior partners of the firm, are keeping a cheerful eye on proceedings, and I can’t help feeling this is a firm that might be nice to work for. Must look up my notes on where and when this was taken. I seem to recollect that Val thought it dated from ‘early 1970s’. If that’s right, then "Columbia House, The Aldwych (about ¼ mile from Maxwell House): 1969 to 1973; (4 years)” may be the location.
