2F 0.6.0T No. 47169 at Greenock Princes Pier, summer 1957 or 8.

A memory from one of my two cycling summer holidays with my school (MCS, Oxford) friend Graeme Burton (GDF Burton),who lived at Stanton Harcourt, near Eynsham, Oxon, in those days. In 1956/7 we cycled round Scotland, starting at Carlisle and touring all (or as many as we had energy to reach) of the steam engine sheds, as we could, and photogaphing the steam engines ‘on shed’ as we went. Not all engines were photographed of course. But significant numbers were. And here is a chunky outside-cylindered LMR 0-6-0 tank (an unconventional layout (**) for us both, used as we were to the GWR mainly inside-cylindered tanks), shunting trucks somewhere near Greenock Princes Pier shed, as we toured it (with an official permit, obtained by Graeme!). We funded the trip by vacation work during the first part of the summer holidays in the central Oxford office of the Local Surveyor’s Department - Graeme’s idea. And a good one. (**)[added 26.10.15]: Not correct. Churchward’s classic GWR ‘branch-line’ tanks eg the 41xx class have outside cylinders. I was thinking of 0-6-0 pannier tanks.
