Terms and Conditions for customers’ use of James Archer & Co’s depository at Pembroke Street, Oxford:

Phil’s History:

A ‘work in progress’ family history website starting from an Archer family of South Oxford, who were freemen, brewers, haulage contractors, and first ‘Archer & Co’ then ‘Archer Cowley & Co’ furniture removers in the 19th and 20th Centuries, inter alia, to whom are linked by marriage the Penfolds and Wells of Southwark and Surrey, the Reeds of Devon, the Gilders of Oxford and Hinckley, the Morgans of Petworth, Sussex, the Garners of Middleton, Lancs and many others. There are connections via Phil and the present generation (born 1930s/40s) with a patent law firm known as "UD&L" with motor-racing and Scottish antecedents.

“Jas Archer & Co’s Depository
36 & 37 Pembroke Street and Castle Street, Oxford

Carriers and Contractors:

Warehousing:

Rent for warehousing is made at the rate of 14/- per furniture van load per month, or separate spaces may be taken varying from 10/- upwards per month each;

Separate rooms may be engaged upon which depositors may place their own locks, at rentals from 30/- upwards per month. Persons not requiring an entire room may be accommodated with a part of the same.

Pianofortes and Pictures are kept in a room specially prepared, and of a suitable temperature. Pianofortes are warehoused from 6/- per month, each.

Boxes or Packages averaging 1 cwt each are warehoused from 1/- per month each, or 8/- per dozen, or by special arrangement.

Carriages warehoused: Dog carts: 6/-; Phaetons: 8/-; Broughams: 10/- per month each; or by special arrangement.

Metals, heavy goods and merchandise warehoused according to agreement.

NB: the above terms are exclusive of the cost of removing the property to or from the depository, and in some cases a small extra charge is made for storing or unstoring and cleaning the goods.

Sale by Auction: In all cases where the rent and other charges on goods remain unpaid for a longer period than 12 months, the same will be sold by public auction to defray expenses.

Fire Insurance Archer & Co will not be responsible for damage by Fire, but being connected with highly respected Insurance Offices are able to effect assurances (sic) upon receipt of instructions to that effect from the owners, and the charges must be paid forthwith by the Depositor. Neither will they be responsible for any loss or damage which may arise from LIGHTNING or CIVIL COMMOTION, nor for damage by moth, although every means will be taken to prevent such damage.

Explosives are not accepted unless the nature be declared and distiinctly marked on the outside of the package containing same.

Change of address Parties changing their address should in all cases notify same to Messrs Archer & Co, to allow of communication if necessary.
