The Pickstones and the Garners of Pendleton and Radcliffe, Lancs:

Below: Descendants of ‘Grandfather William’ (Pickstone), starting with himself and his wife Anne Emerson, their daughter Betsy, who married Harry Garner (Newsagent and Stationer), their daughter Annie and son Samuel (my father-in-law), and so on. The traditional Lancashire and Yorkshire occupations relating to cotton and other textile mill work give way to far more diverse activities reflecting the immense changes in patterns of education since the mid-19th century. The Pickstones are thus connected to the Garners at the (from Phil’s position) ‘grandfather’ level. In other words, my wife (born Ruth Garner) had a paternal grandmother (Betsy Pickstone) who was married to Harry Garner, Ruth’s paternal grandfather.

To see much more in terms of family trees of the Pickstones, please click here, to go to a collection of (manuscript) family trees prepared by Raymond Pickstone, retired schoolmaster, who died in recent years, and lived at Kents Bank, Grange Over Sands, to whom I am very grateful for allowing us to copy his extensive work on this subject. As soon as I can, I will add commentaries on these trees to make them more meaningful.

Corrections for the above: (spelling): (i) “Eddlestone” should be “Eddleston”; (ii) “Eddie” Eddleston should be “Ian Eddleston”, the ‘Eddie’ nickname being adopted to reduce confusion with his Bridge Methodist Church Youth Club friend, Ian Bridge; (iii) “Zoe” should be “Zoë”; (pba.18.9.15 - per Ruth’s cousin Kathleen Hilditch).

Above: this is the census for 1911 at 81 Church Street, Radcliffe, Lancashire. Harry and Betsy Garner are running the Newsagent and Stationery business. Their daughter Annie is 6 and their son Samuel is 1 year. I wonder how much contact, if any, there is with Annie and Samuel’s cousins in the Pickstone household at Wyke, Yorkshire, where Harry’s sister Alice is married to Mark Pickstone and has four children (pba.11.1.15). Harry and Betsy are seen in a family studio portrait, with other Pickstones and Garners in the photo at the foot of the page of Pickstone family trees - click here to go to that page.
