The Walton Well Road Venue

This online shot includes the hallowed venue (in the top LH corner of the grassy area on the far side of the stream passing under the tracks, half-way up this view) where we ‘trainspotters’ used to congregate, and where, I now know, Michael Crew met Dr Garrard and made plans for the Oxford City Locomotive Club. The track diverging to the right led to the Oxford locomotive ‘motive power depot’ or shed, the extreme RH branch of the track running alongside the allotments easily visible at the RHS of this view, and alongside (on its LHS) the ramped-upwards track of the Oxford coaling plant. Here on the single track beside the ‘coaler', on a Sunday afternoon in the (middish 1950s, I think) one could sometimes find a Crosti-boilered “92000” 2-10-0 heavy freight engine, which was a sight to see for one bred on handsome ‘Churchward’-stye locos as normal.(pba.22.1.15).
