So here we can see exactly why Ruth, born 1944 never met her ‘Grandpa Garner’, Harry Garner. He died in 1936, the year of Edward VIII’s abdication and the year of my parents (Gwen Penfold and Fred Archer)’s wedding in Oxford. And three years before World War II began in 1939. Harry lived to be 63. His son, Samuel (the informant for this death certificate), and my father-in-law, died three years younger, at age 60 in 1970, only 34 years later. And, somewhat symmetrically, it was 34 years earlier that Harry Garner had married Betsy Pickstone at The Bridge Methodist Church. So, they were married about 34 years, which is significantly longer than their son Sam, who died in 1970, only 28 years after marrying Nancy Philpotts in 1942. And here am I, their son-in-law, writing all this up in the 50th year of my marriage to their elder daughter Ruth. Well, well.
