Phil’s History:

A ‘work in progress’ family history website starting from an Archer family of South Oxford, who were freemen, brewers, haulage contractors, and first ‘Archer & Co’ then ‘Archer Cowley & Co’ furniture removers in the 19th and 20th Centuries, inter alia, to whom are linked by marriage the Penfolds and Wells of Southwark and Surrey, the Reeds of Devon, the Gilders of Oxford and Hinckley, the Morgans of Petworth, Sussex, the Garners of Middleton, Lancs and many others. There are connections via Phil and the present generation (born 1930s/40s) with a patent law firm known as "UD&L" with motor-racing and Scottish antecedents.

This is the list, made by my brother Edward Archer, from information provided by Gwen, our mother, about where she, and her parents, Frank and Rosa Penfold, lived or had lived, over the years.

Gwen was born in 1909 at Horsham. I have the exact address and even went there to photograph the house a few years ago and I will post that photo in due course. Gwen died in 2009, aged 100 and one-quarter, on 31.10.2009, her wedding anniversary (73 years from 1936).

So, after Horsham, Sussex, they lived at Hove, Cricklewood, Merstham, Cricklewood, Brighton, Brighton, Richmond, Kingston, Rottingdean and Oxford. The latter two were Rosa on her own after Frank died in 1959. Whether they lived elsewhere than Horsham earlier in their married life is not recorded in Edward’s list. I need to check on the birth certificate for Vincent Hamilton Penfold, Gwen’s elder brother on this point. Probably I do have that certificate.

There is much family history attached to this lifetime of pilgrimage between all those addresses, and I will tell it in due course. Many photographs will illustrate it. All speaking of a world that no longer exists. But is well worth remembering.
