The 19th century Lift Van Engine:

This is taken from an Archer & Co letterhead, and shows a (somewhat ‘Heath-Robinsonian’) artist’s impression of  the 19th century locomotive of the kind used to haul ‘lift vans’ containing furniture.

‘Not very realistic’ may be a relevant comment on the locomotive. But what does that matter? It tells the story. And I shall add some copies of letters of commendation of the firm written by satisfied customers of James Archer in the 1880s.
