Removal from Pembroke Street to Park End Street, effective from 3.11.1947, of the Head Office of Archer Cowley & Co., was formally notified to customers by this printed statement. When I began at Christ Church Cathedral Choir school, in Brewer Street, off St Aldates, Oxford, in September 1949, age 7 going-on 8, and was dropped by my father, from his (not remembered too clearly) Austin 10, HJO 800, every morning at the top of St Ebbe’s Street, outside G.R. Coopers, ironmongers, and walked down St Ebbe’s past Pembroke Street, on the LHS, to Brewer Street, the next on the LHS, I little knew that Archer Cowley & Co’s head office had been there, within a stone’s throw from my morning walk, every day. Dad went onwards of course, along New Road, after dropping me, westwards towards the station and into Park End street. He had worked for AC&Co since 1926, so that was 23 years even then,in 1949. But that was only 7 years less than his father, who was 27 years older than him. And for Dad it was a life-long working relationship - from 1926 until 1969, when the family firm was sold to Cantays. A life-long 43 years, which began after about 6 or so years working for George Blake & Co, the cabinet-makers and house-furnishers of Little Clarendon Street. My working life was from 1965 to 2002, a mere 37 years compared with about 49 years!
